Crafted by the talented local Aggie artist, Dr. Dary Dega of Degallery Art Gallery Studio (degallery.us), this year's Christmas in Aggieland ornament showcases a cherished tradition at Texas A&M University: Aggie Yell Leaders.
All Aggies know it: Aggies don’t cheer, they yell. And the responsibility of hyping up the crowd at every Texas A&M Football game, as well as other events, belongs to Yell Leaders. Yell Leaders are elected by the student body and represent a team of upperclassmen – three seniors and two juniors. Their job is to entertain and energize the crowd by leading fans in yells, accompanied by hand signals. The tradition began during a football game in the early 1900’s when, believe it or not, the Aggies were losing badly and the crowds were getting bored. You can easily spot the white coverall-wearing Aggie Yell Leaders on the sidelines of the playing field in front of the student section, encouraging Aggies to show their spirit.
It is now our turn to encourage you, as you hang the 2024 Christmas in Aggieland ornament, to let it be a reminder of the rich Aggie traditions and how Aggies support and enrich our community! Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a spirited Gig 'em!
